Top surgery cost varies widely depending on country, technique, surgeon and what is included. Here are indicative price ranges by destination and what to check before you decide.
Top surgery cost at a glance
How much does top surgery cost? As an indication only, masculinizing chest surgery costs roughly €3,500–6,500 as a package in Turkey, €6,000–10,000 at a private clinic in Italy, €5,000–9,000 self-pay in Germany and about $8,000–15,000 in the USA. The final price depends on technique, surgeon and inclusions and must be confirmed in a written quote.
If you are researching FTM top surgery or chest masculinization, you will quickly find very different prices. The country is only part of the story: the surgical technique, the surgeon's experience, the type of anaesthesia, the length of the hospital stay and what is included in the price all play a role. This part of our complete top surgery guide gives indicative price ranges and a checklist for comparing quotes with confidence.
Top surgery cost by country: destinations compared
The figures below are a rough orientation only. They change over time and never replace a personalised written quote. They generally refer to masculinizing chest surgery (bilateral subcutaneous mastectomy with or without nipple grafts). Each destination has its own page with more detail on clinics, timing and travel planning.
| Destination | Indicative range | Notes | Learn more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey (Istanbul), package | approx. €3,500–6,500 | Usually includes surgery, hospital stay, hotel and transfers; flights usually excluded | top surgery cost in Turkey |
| Italy, private clinic | approx. €6,000–10,000 | Pre-op tests, follow-up visits and compression vest often extra | top surgery in Italy: private and public |
| Thailand (Bangkok), package | approx. €4,000–7,000 | Long-haul flight and a longer stay to budget for | top surgery cost in Thailand |
| Spain, private clinic | approx. €6,000–9,000 | Short flights from most of Europe | top surgery prices in Spain |
| Germany, private (self-pay) | approx. €5,000–9,000 | Statutory insurance may cover it after an approval process | top surgery in Germany and costs |
| USA, private surgeon | approx. $8,000–15,000 | Anaesthesia and facility fees sometimes billed separately; large differences between states | top surgery cost in the USA |
| Switzerland, private clinic | often at the upper end or above | Hospital costs are generally high | – |
| Public healthcare (e.g. Italy's SSN, UK NHS) | low or no direct cost | Often long waiting lists and specific requirements | top surgery on public healthcare |
All figures are indicative only: the final price always depends on the surgeon's individual assessment. Our overview of top surgery destinations in Europe and worldwide also compares travel time, language support and follow-up options.

What drives the price
Two quotes with the same total can include very different services. To understand the real top surgery cost, break the price down into its main components:
- Technique: double incision with free nipple grafts usually takes longer in theatre than a periareolar or keyhole approach. The technique, however, is chosen with your surgeon based on chest size, skin elasticity, nipple position and your goals, not on price. An overview of all top surgery techniques explains the differences.
- Surgeon and team: specialist training in plastic surgery, specific experience in gender-affirming surgery, quality of nursing care.
- Anaesthesia: top surgery is normally performed under general anaesthesia; the anaesthetist's fee may be included or billed separately.
- Hospital stay: one or more nights, plus extra nights if needed.
- Compression vest and dressings: sometimes included, sometimes not.
- Pre-operative tests: blood tests, ECG and, where appropriate, breast imaging or other checks as part of the breast cancer risk assessment recommended by international standards.
- Drains and follow-up: number of check-ups, removal of drains and stitches.
What a Turkey package typically includes and excludes
Many people who choose top surgery in Turkey book an "all-inclusive" package. Read carefully what that actually means.
Usually included: in-person pre-operative consultation, basic tests, surgery and anaesthesia, one or more hospital nights, a first compression vest, several hotel nights, airport–hotel–clinic transfers, language support and a check-up before you fly home.
Often excluded: flights, extra hotel nights (for example if the surgeon advises a longer stay), meals outside the hotel, take-home medication, a companion's costs, travel insurance and follow-up visits in your home country.
Get it in writing: the revision policy (are touch-ups free, discounted or fully charged? within what time frame? who pays for the second trip?) and how complications requiring urgent treatment are handled.
Why are prices in Turkey often lower? The main factors are lower labour and living costs, exchange rates and the high volume of plastic surgery, which allows clinics to offer standardised packages. A lower price does not automatically mean lower quality, but it does not guarantee good quality either: safety depends on the surgeon, the hospital and how care is organised, not on the country as such. That is why each offer should be compared individually, using the same criteria.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Time off work or study: recovery usually takes several weeks, with limits on arm movement and lifting.
- A second compression vest so you can wash one.
- Dressings, silicone sheets or gel for scar care.
- Visits to your GP or a local surgeon during recovery.
- A possible minor touch-up months later.
- Travel and accommodation for a companion.
How to compare written quotes
A trustworthy quote is written, personalised and detailed. Before comparing offers, make sure each one states:
- The name and specialty of the surgeon who will personally operate.
- The proposed technique, justified by your anatomy (assessed from photos or in person).
- The hospital, type of anaesthesia and number of inpatient nights.
- An exact list of what is included and excluded (tests, vest, medication, hotel, transfers).
- How complications are managed and the revision policy.
- Payment terms, deposit and cancellation conditions.

Be wary of prices far below average, "today only" offers, or providers who will not say who operates. A lower price is never worth a higher risk: the best-value top surgery cost is one that includes safe care and a clear follow-up plan.
The public option
Public healthcare or insurance routes exist in several countries, usually with lower out-of-pocket costs but long waiting times and specific criteria. Read our overview of public healthcare routes. Frequently asked questions
As an indication only, Istanbul packages for chest masculinization are often around €3,500–6,500. The price depends on technique, surgeon and included services and is only confirmed in a written quote.
Usually not. Packages generally cover surgery, hospital stay, hotel and transfers, while flights and extra nights are often excluded. Always check the written list of inclusions.
It can, because theatre time and materials differ. However, the technique should be chosen with your surgeon based on your anatomy (size, skin elasticity, nipple position) and goals, not on cost.
It depends on the clinic: some offer free or discounted touch-ups within a set period, others do not. Get the conditions, time frame and who pays for any further trip in writing.
In some countries yes, for example via specialised centres in Italy or NHS gender services in the UK, usually with long waiting times and specific criteria. See our guide to public healthcare routes.
