Top surgery in Turkey, especially in Istanbul, is one of the most common choices for people travelling from Europe. This guide explains how to check the surgeon and hospital, how long to stay and how to manage aftercare at home.
Is top surgery in Turkey a good option? For many people it is: in Istanbul, packages cost roughly €3,500–6,500, flights from most of Europe take two to four hours and waiting times are short. Safety, however, depends on the surgeon and hospital, not the country, so careful checks and a plan for returning home are essential.
Top surgery in Turkey: why many people choose Istanbul
- Experience: plastic surgery in Turkey has a high case volume, and some surgeons regularly perform chest masculinization.
- Cost: packages are generally lower than at private clinics in Western Europe; see indicative ranges in our top surgery cost guide.
- Distance: direct flights from many European cities take around two to four hours.
- Timing: waiting times for a surgery date are often shorter than on public pathways.
None of these advantages removes the risks of surgery itself or those linked to travel. To compare Turkey with Italy, Thailand and other countries, see our top surgery destinations in Europe and beyond.
How to verify the surgeon and hospital in Turkey
- Surgeon's specialty: ask for the full name of the surgeon who will personally operate, and check that they are a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, ideally a member of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons.
- Hospital licensing: the hospital must be licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health, which also publishes a list of facilities and intermediaries authorised for health tourism; some hold international accreditation such as JCI.
- Specific experience: ask how often the surgeon performs gender-affirming mastectomy and for consented before/after photos of people with a chest similar to yours.
- Pre-assessment: there should be a review of your photos and medical history and a reasoned technique proposal (see choosing a top surgery technique).
- No pressure: expiring discounts, demands for immediate payment or vague answers are warning signs.
Before booking, prepare chest photos as instructed by the clinic, a summary of your medical history (medication, hormones, allergies, smoking), any results relevant to breast cancer risk assessment and, if requested, a letter from a health professional. Always check the current entry requirements for Turkey.
How long to stay in Istanbul and how the trip works
The recommended stay is often around 7–10 days, but your surgeon decides based on the technique and how you heal. A typical schedule:
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival, hotel transfer, sometimes pre-op consultation |
| Day 1–2 | Meeting the surgeon, tests, pre-operative markings, informed consent |
| Day 2 | Surgery under general anaesthesia, one or more nights in hospital |
| Days 3–7 | Rest at the hotel, check-ups, drain removal if used |
| Days 7–10 | Final check, removal of graft dressings if applicable, fit-to-fly clearance |

Travelling with someone you trust is strongly advisable: arm movement is limited in the first days and you will need help with luggage and daily tasks. To get organised, read preparing for top surgery, including stopping smoking.
Aftercare back home
Recovery does not end at the airport. Before booking, clarify how remote follow-up works (photos, video calls) and for how long, who to contact with symptoms in the evening or at weekends, and what written instructions you will receive on the compression vest, dressings and exercise; details are in our top surgery recovery guide.

Tell your GP before you leave and bring a written surgical report in English. If you develop fever, sudden or one-sided swelling, increasing pain, discharge or breathing difficulties, see a doctor or go to an emergency department immediately.
Insurance, risks and red flags
Consider travel insurance that covers medical costs and early repatriation: many standard policies exclude complications of planned surgery. Flights and reduced mobility after surgery raise the risk of blood clots, so follow advice on hydration, movement and when it is safe to fly. Like any surgery, top surgery carries risks: haematoma, seroma, infection, nipple graft loss, changes in sensation, contour irregularities, raised scars and the possible need for a top surgery revision. All techniques are described in our top surgery procedures section.
Be wary if you are not told who will operate, if there is no written informed consent, if you are promised guaranteed results or "no scars", if the price is far below average with no explanation, or if there is no plan for complications.
